Mr. Amos was born July 10, 1929, in Houston, Texas. John Virgil Amos was the son of the late John Virgil Sr. and Faye Odell (Evans) Amos. Mr. Amos spent the first few years of his childhood in Houston, Texas before losing his father at the age of 14 years old. He and his family then moved to Timpson, Texas. At the young age of 20, John began working on a pipeline in Michigan. One day, he went into a local restaurant where he first met the love of his life, Iris Mortimore, working as a waitress. This was the beginning of what would become a beautiful and lifelong love story. John and Iris were married on August 12, 1949 after just one month of dating. They faithfully stood beside one another for over 67 years. John had many endeavors over his 87 years here, from working in the pipeline industry, working for Sears for many years, then purchasing a local grocery store, owning his own coffee shop, then his own trucking business for over 20 years. Many would say he was an outstanding entrepreneur. John finally decided to retire in 2002. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with each of them. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. John loved his church family and was a member of Woodland Christian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Iris; daughters, Vicki Hightower and husband Rick, Valerie Moore and husband Leland; brothers, Donald Amos and wife Elaine, Tom Amos and wife Betty; grandchildren, David Amos, Jennifer Amos, Jena Westmoreland and husband John, Chelsea Cooper and husband Josh, MaKayla Baker, Todd Moore and wife Leslie, Julie Durham and husband Giff, Cody Moore, Demi Moore, Annie Hightower; great grandchildren, Zoila Amos, Zena Amos, Alexander Amos, Jaxon Westmoreland, Jasper Westmoreland, Jolie Westmoreland, Kayden Cooper, Avery Hammers, Cash Moore, Lauren Moore, Brylie Durham; and a host family and friends who will miss him greatly.
John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Virgil Duane Amos; and grandson, Robert John Amos.
